Sloss Furnaces First Avenue North

Sloss-Sheffield later became part of U.S. Pipe & Foundry. Donated to the City of Birmingham in 1971, Sloss is a preserved historic site today, also serving as a venue for various events.   Sloss iron was sold as merchant pig iron to other iron industries, sort of like  a chocolate maker selling chocolate to other candy makers.  Being close to downtown on the First Avenue Viaduct, Sloss is perhaps the best remembered of the Birmingham furnaces. This is my vote for the best Birmingham iron and steel postcard.

A late 1940's linen texture card published by Merchants cigar & Candy and printed by Color Picture Publications, Cambridge, Massachusetts. the bottom card was postmared 1952, published by Birmingham woodenware, printed by Dexter Press.
